Chocodoodles (Chocolate Snickerdoodles)

It’s been a few days since my last recipe but there is good reason! We welcomed a new member into our family: Wally, the goldendoodle! It’s been exactly one week since we brought him home and we already can’t imagine not having Wally around! Our car ride home from the breeder was a little rocky and I’ll spare you the details but will just say that we learned fairly quickly that car rides and Wally don’t mix well quite yet. But once home, he found shelter under our living room chair for awhile. New place, new people: he needed  a safe spot! He’d maneuver himself under there though depending on where you were in the living room so that he had eyes on you the whole time! Slowly but surely though we brought him out of his shell and the chair and now we have a puppy full of energy, spunk and of course lots of kisses! When we walk in the door or see him first thing in the morning his tail couldn’t go faster and he just wants to be picked up and loved on. We of course oblige with zero complaints! He’s already learning good manners and can sit politely and shake your hand like a little gentleman! Although this is typically a food blog, I just can’t help myself but share a photo of Wally on his first day home!

I thought it only appropriate that with the introduction of Wally, I share a recipe in honor of him! What could be better than a chocodoodle for my goldendoodle! A chocodoodle is really just a snicker doodle cookie that has cocoa powder added and everything is better with chocolate! But, since we are playing on the theme of the doodle part of Wally, if you are in the mood for something other than a cookie, a snickerdoodle cupcake might just be the perfect choice!

Here is what you’ll need for the chocodoodles!

(From Nigella Lawson: “How To Be a Domestic Goddess”. Makes about 30 cookies.)

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/3 plus 3 tablespoon all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with wax or parchment paper and combine the 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon on a small plate.

Start by mixing the butter and 1/3 cup of granulated sugar. Allow the mixture to combine until you have a creamy consistency. Add the egg and vanilla extract and beat thoroughly. You can mix the dry ingredients in a small bowl and add them all at once or you can take the semi-lazy route that I usually take and add the dry ingredients in this order: baking powder, salt, nutmeg, cocoa and then the flower. Give everything a good stir.

To form the cookies, pull off a small piece of dough and roll it in your palms to form small walnut sized cookie dough balls. Roll each of the balls in the plate of cinnamon and sugar and make sure it’s completely covered. Arrange the cookie dough balls on the baking sheet, leaving just a little bit of space between each one. They won’t spread out too much.

Bake the cookies for 15 minutes. They’ll start to crack on the top letting you know they are ready to take out. Once out, let rest on the baking sheet for another minute and then transfer to the wire rack to completely cool. Maybe transfer all cookies to the wire rack minus the one that “accidentally” makes it into your mouth for a taste! There’s nothing like a warm, soft cookie straight from the oven!

Although these cookies are in spirit of Wally, he unfortunately cannot partake in the eating of them! He will have to make do with just smelling the chocodoodles and imagining how delicious they taste! I should also go ahead and apologize for any Wally pictures that make their way into the mix with the food photos on here. I’ll try to keep it to a minimum so I’m not one of those people that talks incessantly about their dogs but in these first few weeks, sometimes it’s just SO hard to not snap a picture of him and share with others! He puts a smile on our faces every day and I can’t imagine him not doing the same for others! But whether you have a goldendoodle of your own or not, chocodoodles should definitely be baking in your oven! For now, that’s chocodooles…in the shell of a nut!
